Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of intensity of illumination on the eyes refractive power and pupils size. Methods: Refractive power of each eye, and pupil`s size were measured at the intensity of illumination l00Lux, 300Lux, 500Lux, 800Lux and 1,000Lux targeting 30 male and female subjects(11 men and 19 women) aged 20 on average with at least 1.0 in corrected eyesight for both eyes and who have no eye related complication or surgery experience. Results: Change for the right eye`s average spherical refractive power manifested change of S+0.03¡¾0.24D at 500~800Lux. As for the change for the left eye`s average spherical refractive power, it was S+0.08¡¾0.24D at 100`~300Lux. As for the change of the right eye`s average spherical refractive power, it was C+0.02D at 5o0~800Lux. As for the change for the left eye`s average spherical refractive power, it was C+0. 10D at 500~800Lux. Moreover, pupil`s size following intensity of illumination was 6.02 mm at 100Lux, 6.04 mm at 300Lux, 5.75 mm at 500Lux, 4.01 mm at 800Lux and 3.46 mm at 1,000Lux. Conclusions: Intensity of illumination change in the eyes` refractive power following intensity of illumination did not manifest significant difference. However, spherical and cylindrical refractive power decreased relatively in some areas concerning the change in the intensity of illumination. Moreover, change in pupil`s size decreased in a statistically significant manner when it comes to the pupils size starting from 500Lux. Accordingly, appropriate standard for the eye sight examination room`s intensity of illumination is needed.
